Talk to your registrar

July 6, 2008 · Filed Under Domains

This is a follow up on my last post about talking to domainers. Talking to you registrar is just as beneficial.

If you’re a domainer you are likely to be one of your registrars biggest customers in terms of volume and repeat business. Their average customer likely only has a couple of domains.

Give them a call or an email and introduce yourself, you’ve already spent some money with them, possibly a substantial amount, they should be happy to hear from you.

If you are already doing some decent volume or intend to, discuss pricing on registrations, renewals, transfers, etc, they all have some room to move. Give them some honest feedback about their service, how they could improve the interface to better suit your needs, and how those improvements will help your business register more names.

Some registrars lack the bulk functionality your business might require, but some will be happy to offer a compromise where they perform the bulk tasks on your behalf, things they can do on the backend that are not possible from their client interface.

Registrars are also in contact with other domainers and from time to time can put you in touch with each other.

Being on friendly terms with your registrar is also particularly helpful in guiding you through the auDA policies.

Prepare a list of topics you’d like to cover with them and pick up the phone, I guarantee you will get something positive out of it, if you don’t, you’ve proved me wrong and its probably time to find a new registrar.

Also as a side note, this advice can be applied to domain parking companies, and affiliate programs.

Two quick phone calls and you might be getting cheaper domains, and an increased payout from your parking provider, imagine seeing your profit margin increase 10% or more in the space of a few minutes.

Nice article, I agree with many points you have mentioned.

I’m an account manager for a domain/hosting company and as mentioned, having a personal relationship with customers is great as not only do i not rely on the control panels in order to understand what the client is talking about but also get to know them beyond a customer/client level.

Anyway if anyone would value this additional personal type of customer service from a provider let wade know and he can pass on my email address. Also as mentioned in the article I can offer discounts upon bulk domain registrations so again just let me know.
